Clear drawings, sensible feature sizes and an unambiguous material specification reduce quotation time, prevent avoidable questions and help the finished component match the designer’s intent.

Define the Material Properly
State the material type, grade and thickness rather than simply writing “steel” or “aluminium”. If a particular finish, coating or grain direction matters, include that information as well.
Material choice affects cutting parameters, edge quality, cost and the secondary operations available after cutting.
Supply a Clear Drawing
A production drawing should identify the overall geometry, critical dimensions, hole sizes and any tolerances that matter to the function of the part.
If you are supplying CAD data, include a drawing as well when it contains information that geometry alone cannot communicate, such as tolerances, material grade, finish, thread details or inspection requirements.
Identify Critical Features
Not every dimension needs a tight tolerance. Mark the dimensions that genuinely affect fit or function so they can be reviewed before manufacture.
Small holes, narrow slots, sharp internal details and features very close to an edge can become more difficult as material thickness increases.
If a feature is critical, show it clearly rather than relying on a general tolerance note.
Allow for the Cutting Process
The laser removes a narrow path of material known as the kerf. CNC programming compensates for this when producing the part profile, so customers should normally provide the required finished dimensions rather than attempting to compensate the drawing themselves.
The cut edge and achievable detail depend on the material, thickness, assist gas and geometry. Parts close to the limit of a process should therefore be reviewed individually.
Think About the Next Operation
If the component will be folded, tapped, countersunk or welded, tell us at quotation stage.
Features can often be planned more effectively when the complete manufacturing route is known rather than treating laser cutting as an isolated operation.

Specify Edge and Surface Requirements
Laser-cut parts are deburred as standard, but other requirements should be stated explicitly.
If cosmetic appearance, edge condition, protective film or a particular surface is important, identify it before manufacture.
State Traceability Requirements Early
If material certification or traceability is required for the job, include this in the enquiry.
This allows the requirement to follow the material and production route from the beginning rather than being reconstructed afterwards.
