Aluminium is widely used in sheet metal fabrication because it combines low weight, good corrosion resistance and excellent versatility. Different aluminium alloys offer different levels of strength, formability and corrosion resistance, allowing the material to be selected to suit the finished application.

At Yorkshire Profiles, the aluminium grades we most commonly supply and process include 1050, 5083, 5251 and 6082, alongside other grades where required.

Aluminium Properties

Aluminium has a density of approximately one third that of steel, making it particularly useful where reducing component weight is important.

Pure aluminium is relatively soft and highly formable, so most engineering applications use aluminium alloys. By combining aluminium with elements such as magnesium, silicon and manganese, manufacturers can produce grades with significantly different mechanical and fabrication properties.

Aluminium also naturally forms a thin protective oxide layer when exposed to air. This gives many aluminium grades good resistance to atmospheric corrosion without requiring an additional protective coating.

Aluminium Grades We Commonly Supply

1050 Aluminium

1050 is a commercially pure aluminium grade offering excellent formability and corrosion resistance. It is commonly used for relatively lightly loaded components, covers, panels, electrical applications and general sheet metal work.

5083 Aluminium

5083 is a high-strength aluminium-magnesium alloy with excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine environments. It is frequently used for marine, offshore, transport and heavy-duty fabricated components.

5251 Aluminium

5251 offers a useful combination of strength, corrosion resistance and formability. It is widely used for general sheet metal fabrication, enclosures, panels, vehicle components and decorative applications.

6082 Aluminium

6082 is a higher-strength structural aluminium alloy commonly used where greater mechanical strength is required. Typical applications include structural components, machinery, transport equipment and engineered fabrications.

We can also source and process other aluminium grades depending on specification, availability and project requirements.

Aluminium Laser Cutting at Yorkshire Profiles

Our modern fibre laser cutting systems allow us to process aluminium quickly and accurately while maintaining excellent edge quality and repeatability.

We can currently laser cut aluminium sheet and plate up to 15mm thick, depending on the particular grade, component geometry and cutting requirements.

Our laser cutting capability is supported by additional in-house services including:

This allows aluminium components to progress from flat sheet through to finished fabricated parts within a single manufacturing facility.
